whatsapp conditions

The shadow of the new WhatsApp conditions it is getting longer and longer. After having delayed them to May, WhatsApp has given new details of what will happen if they are not accepted. Thus, in the case of wanting to continue using the app, it will be necessary to give in privacy or not being able to read the messages.

Thanks to the RGPD, in the countries of the European Union we are protected against new WhatsApp policy, where the application can read the chats that we have with companies that use their message management system. However, the rest of the world is not protected by that law, and we will also have to accept the new conditions if we want to continue using the app.

WhatsApp will force you to accept the conditions to use the app

Last week, WhatsApp announced that it was adding a banner at the top of the application to better explain the changes to its terms of use. However, what we did not know is what would happen to users who decided not to accept the new application conditions.

However, the company has now detailed what will happen if the new conditions are not accepted. To do this, WhatsApp states that it will ask WhatsApp users “little by little” to accept the new conditions to «be able to continue having the full functionality of WhatsApp from the 15 th of May«.

Thus, if the new conditions are not accepted, users can continue to receive calls and notifications, but they will not be able to read or send any messages from the app. This remains so for an undetermined time, although then it is possible to restore WhatsApp messages that we have stored locally in a backup copy. The problem is that if WhatsApp is not used during 120 days, the service will delete your account. Therefore, it is almost mandatory to accept the conditions to be able to continue using the service, despite the fact that WhatsApp could allow you to continue using the app without problem, and limit the functionality of WhatsApp Business for those users who do not accept.

Facebook will access more and more information from WhatsApp

The main problem behind this policy change has to do with Facebook. When the company bought WhatsApp, it claimed it was going to keep app data separate from your social network. However, in 2016, WhatsApp updated its policy to share information such as device data or contact phone numbers. The new terms of use will give even more access to Facebook, with payment and transaction data that can be used to receive personalized advertising on Facebook and elsewhere. The next step will be to integrate all your messaging platforms into one, giving Facebook even more data access.

WhatsApp has more than 2 billion users worldwide, but in recent weeks there have been millions of people who have switched to using alternatives such as Telegram or Signal, which respect more the privacy of users and do not read the messages of those who use the platform. In fact, Signal has copied WhatsApp functions in recent weeks, and it is even possible to transfer WhatsApp chats to Telegram.
