Outgoing Fine Gael TD, Maria Bailey, has confirmed that she is not a candidate in next month’s General Election.

The announcement comes two months after she was deselected as a candidate for the party in the Dún Laoghaire constituency in Dublin.

Ms Bailey has been in political difficulty since it emerged that she had taken a personal injuries claim against a Dublin hotel after falling off a swing. She later withdrew her case from the courts.

In a statement today, Ms Bailey said that “with great sadness” she had decided not to seek re-election to the Dáil.

The statement added that “the past number of months have been extremely difficult … both privately and politically”.

She thanked those who had supported her throughout her political career.
